Filey Flash Floods (18/07/2007).

On the afternoon of Wednesday 18th July 2007 Filey was suddenly hit by flash floods. Although the weathermen had predicted rain for the area no one could have been prepared for the huge amount of rain that fell in just1 hour.

Many of the Garden Flats on The Crescent were swamped with water as the drains were just unable to cope. All of the surrounding roads and paths were soon under fast flowing water, making it impossible to see where the road ended and the paths began. Every avenue that led down to the sea became a raging waterfall as the torrential waters poured down the hills, steps and paths towards the sea. The force of the water caused the cliff face to fall away in many places, even taking the footpath and railings by the bowling green with it, washing down into the chalets and shops below.

The normally quiet stream that runs along Martin? Ravine became a fast flowing torrent of water that swept down to the beach, carving a path in the hillside and tearing up the tarmac of the footpath as it went, sweeping huge boulders and debris down towards the beach. The flood waters burst through the newly laid storm drain and cascaded down the hill into the shops and finally flowing over the seawall down onto the beach in a fierce, crashing, muddy torrent.

Sky News helicopters were soon on the scene and the following day GMTV sent it? reporter to film live from the beach by Martins Ravine.

Thankfully our Guest House survived the floods in tact but below are some of the images we recorded on that day and the aftermath as the full extent of the damage was revealed.
